For every minute that the ventricular fibrillation will occur without any care, the risk of resuscitation decreases by 10 per cent. As such the person can die if the treatment is delayed by ten minutes. The only effective way to stop this disturbed heart rhythm is through the use of a defibrillator. Because automatic external defibrillators are so easy to use, and since they are known to save many lives, it is vital that they should be installed at all important locations frequented by many. In many public places defibrillation of public access (PAD) has also been implemented by hanging AEDs on walls so that they can be quickly used on a person if he has a heart attack. Airports, train stations, shopping malls, or other busy places are the most popular sites.
One can also divide defibrillators into two types: mono-phasic and biphasic. In the mono-phasic system, the electrical impulse is transmitted rapidly in a single direction from one electrode to the other, whereas in the biphasic method, the path of the electrical impulse varies and it completes one loop in about 10 milliseconds.
Because AEDs are so effective and convenient to use, government efforts should be made to make defibrillators as common in public places as fire extinguishers to save more and more lives.
